Bhagavad Gita Continued:

Stanza 139:

Among the Vedic meters / Chandus ( Chandus are the various styles of reciting vedic hymns ) , I am the Gayatri chandus.

Any Vedic hymn recited in the Gayathri chandus becomes Gayathri mantra. One among many such Gayathri Mantras is the one coined by the Sage Vishwamithra. Sage Vishwamithra was a king and a warrior who had challenged and failed before Brahmarishi Vasista’s spiritual power. Therefore, king Vishwamithra turned to spiritual practises to overcome the spiritual powers of Brahmarishi Vasista. In the course of his spiritual penance Sage Vishwamithra coined the well known mantra “Om Bhur Bhuvah Swuvah, Tat Savithur Vareenyam, Bhargo Deevasya Dheemahi, Deyoo Yoonah Prachodayaath” in Gayatri chandus which is in vogue now.

However, neither Brahmarshi Vasista nor earlier Brahmarshis COULD NOT have practised the Gayathri mantra coined by Vishwamithra which came into practise later, as they were already Brahmarushis. They must have practised other vedic mantras to become Brahmarushis much earlier to Vishwamithra. In fact there are several Gayathri mantras in the Vedas. Just to name a few,

  1. Naaraayanaaya Vidhmahe Vaasudevaaya Dheemahi | Thanno Vishnuh Prachoodayaath||

  2. Tath Purushaaya Vidhmahe Mahaadeevaaya Dheemahi | Tanno Rudhrah Prachoodayaath ||

  3. Vedaathmanaaya Vidhmahe Hiranyagarbhaaya Dheemahi | Tanno Brahmah Prachoodayaath ||

  4. Vajranakhaaya Vidhmahe Theekshna Danghshtraaya Dheemahi | Tanno Naarasimhah Prachoodayath ||

  5. Bhaskaraaya Vidhmahe Mahadhutikaraaya Dheemahi | Tanno Aadhithya Prachoodayaath||

  6. Vyshwaanaraaya Vidhmahe Laaleelaaya Dheemahi| Tanno Agni Prachoodayaath ||

  7. Tath Purushaaya Vidhmahe Vakrathundaaya Dheemahi | Tanno Danthih Prachoodayaath ||

  8. Tath Purushaaya Vidhmahe Maahaasenaaya Dheemahi | Tanno Shanmukha Prachoodayaath||

  9. Kaathyaayanaaya Vidhamahe Kanyakumaari Dheemahi | Tanno Durgi Prachoodayaath ||

  10. Tath Purushaaya Vidhmahe Suvarna Pakhshaaya Dheemahi | Tanno Garudah Prachoodayaath ||

  11. etc.. and so on .

Any mantra coined in the Gaythri chandus is known as Gayathri mantra. Sage Vishwamithra coined the present Gayathri mantra which is in vogue praying to the radiance (Savithur) of the rising golden rays of the morning Sun, which enlivens the three worlds (Bhuloka, Bhuvarloka and Swargaloka) to enliven our body, mind and intellect correspondingly .

Stanza 140:

Arjuna, However know the truth that I am the CAUSE for the living and non living creation and therefore all are MYSELF .

Stanza 141:

Arjuna, therefore there is no point in knowing those things where I am more expressed (pronounced). It is better to know ME objectively.

Stanza 142:

Arjuna said “By your grace all my ignorance has diminished through the spiritual knowledge rendered by you ”.

Stanza 143 :

O Lord, is it possible to see you with all the cosmic principles enunciated by you, in your cosmic form ?. I wish to see it if you are willing.

Stanza 144:

Lord Krishna said “ You will not be able to see my transcendental form with the mortal eyes of yours. Therefore, I will provide you transcendental vision (a vision beyond five senses) to see my ALL EXPRESSIVE form ”. Saying so Lord Krishna granted transcendental vision to Arjuna and assumed HIS all expressive form.

Stanza 145:

Arjuna, see now my infinite and various cosmic forms (cosmic principles) in my this transcendentally manifested one FORM.

Stanza 146:

Arjuna, see in this my ONE transcendental manifestation all the moving and non moving creation, and the universe and also whatever you want to see.

[The Supreme Being or the Universal consciousness is the unmanifest ABSLOUTE which has transcendentally manifested here. It is beyond the five senses but perceivable by the individual consciousness. This is the fourth dimension (Thuriya) which is beyond the five senses. Therefore, it is common to observe that the forms of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are always shown with four arms indicating that these divine forces can be experienced when one is in the fourth state of consciousness i.e. in the transcendental consciousness (Thuriya Chethana) which is beyond the five senses {waking, sleeping and dreaming states of consciousness (three states) are experienced in the normal course by all the living beings}. The fifth dimension (Thuriyatheetam) is the dimensionless state which is beyond time and space and formless as well.

Here the Supreme Being has expressed in a FORM in which all the aspects of creation and Universe (Gods and Goddesses i.e. all laws of nature divine and darker in their traits ) and the moving (living beings, stars , planets etc.) and the non moving aspects , have been shown in an symbolically expressed ONE FORM known as Vishwa Rupa (cosmic form)].

Stanza 147:

Sanjaya, The narrator of running commentary of the war to Drutarastra said “O king, if a thousand suns rises at once, the light produced by them cannot equal to the ONE which Lord Krishna is displaying to Arjuna. EVERYTHING is there in IT ”.

Stanza 148:

Arjuna said “ O Lord, I am seeing in YOU infinite number of faces, arms, stomach , eyes and your form in all directions. I am not able to see your beginning or the end (infinite is your expressed form).

Stanza 149:

Lord, I am seeing in YOU, all the gods and goddesses, all the living beings , all the sages, all the serpents and even the Brahma (the creator) and Shiva (the destroyer of creation) .

Stanza 150:

Lord, you are the ONLY worth knowing ONE. You are the supreme, unmanifest Absolute, non changing BEING, eternal and indestructible. You are the home of Dharma (righteousness) and the Supreme shelter for the creation.

Stanza 151:

Lord, I see all the sons of Drutharastra and other kings (supporting Dhuryodhana) and Bheeshma, Drona , Karna, and many of our leading warriors too entering into YOU (implying death) .

Stanza 152 :

A fire emitting from your face is swallowing from all directions. The whole world appears to be burning.

Stanza 153:

Arjuna further said “ Who are you ‘O’ the fierce form, I am surrendering to you. I know you are the Supreme Being but I would like to know your NATURE ”.

Stanza 154:

Lord God said “ Now, I am the deadly TIME which is beginning to destroy the negativity of this world . Most of the warriors of either sides will not survive even if you don’t fight this war (they are already dead as per cosmic WILL) ” .

Stanza 155:

Therefore, Get ready to fight . Win the war, establish righteousness and rule the flourishing kingdom and attain name and fame (which again is the WILL of the Lord) . All the warriors are already killed by ME. You are only for the name sake (to kill their bodies).
